About the Author
In 2015 I was the programming director for Bellevue Lodge, an Alliance summer camp in north-east Alberta. We were running short on available camp speakers so I needed to fill the role for a week. I have served in camp ministry for 10 years at the time, but camp speaking was still a new role. I have sat through many junior high camp speakers in my life, but none of them answered the questions that I had in Junior High. I understood religion, christianity, and Bible stories, but I did not understand the Bible. I did not understand how everything fit together.
“If you only get one chance to talk to anyone about Jesus, then tell a story.”
I decided to take a change of pace from the typical camp speaker, and speak from my brain, rather than my heart. I decided to explain the entire progression of the Bible in 10 talks. This turned out to be quite an adventure for myself as I examined the Bible from a completely different perspective. I had to see the Bible as one story, one theme, one goal. I learned quite a number of things that became the basis for this project. I was wrong to think that I was only speaking from my brain when this is what my heart needed all along.
Attempting to contain the entire Bible into a single story has turned out to be a lot more emotional than I expected, but in the end I had no idea what I was expecting. The story of God loving us is truly the most important message that we could ever hear. I have spent a lot of my life debating long concepts of theology or politics or practical solutions, but all of it has not truly transformed my heart or others towards christ nearly as much. If this journey has taught me one thing, is that if you only get one chance to talk to anyone about Jesus, then tell a story.
